Welcome to the Morningside Lenox Park Association
The MLPA is an all volunteer organization comprised of the residents of Morningside, Lenox Park and the Johnson Estates.
A Letter from the President:
Our neighborhood is a thriving in-town area filled with wonderful homes, shaded parks, an award-winning elementary school, and terrific neighbors. But we also face challenges and we need your help. My goal, as the new MLPA president, is to keep you up-to-date on what's happening in our neighborhood. We are going to do that through this website, the Yahoo message board, the new Facebook page, eBlasts, and newsletters. And, we are going to try to get together more - impromptu Friday afternoon gatherings, organized social events at neighborhood restaurants (stay tuned for information on July's event), and more formal gatherings like the Monumental Ball. Stay tuned for details.
Having enticed you to become involved in the fun events in our neighborhood, I would also like to entice you to get involved in our challenges. Primary among those challenges is the developing plan for the Atlanta Beltline. The densest development along the Beltine will be adjacent to Virginia-Highlands and Morningside. Did you know that a 15 story building is in the plans for Piedmont and Monroe or that, from Cumberland to Kroger, the plan calls for five to nine story buildings along Monroe? Whether you agree or disagree or just want more information, now is the time to get involved.
On June 11, from 6:30 to 8:30, the first of two final design meetings for Subarea 6 (our section) will take place at Hillside, 690 Courtenay Drive. There is alternate parking access at 1301 Monroe Drive opposite the CSO facility on Monroe. Many of our friends and neighbors have devoted countless hours to studying and commenting on the proposed plan and it's time for the rest of us to join the discussion. The agenda for the June 11 meeting will include a discussion of the final draft of the Master Plan as well as a discussion of the completed traffic analysis.
But the Beltline is not our only challenge. On the north side of our neighborhood, there is the ever-present issue of development along Cheshire Bridge Road and the attendant liquor license issues. MLPA monitors and participates in those decisions. There is also pressure along North Highland. Virginia-Highland has successfully worked on a "neighborhood commercial" plan that will guide future development on North Highland, but only as far north as Amsterdam. We need to take the initiative to work on similar issues for the commercial areas within Morningside.
Finally, there is the issue of city services - how can we ensure that they are efficiently and effectively delivered? MLPA works on myriad issues and we want you to join us - whether as a member of the Security Patrol or as a volunteer on various projects. We look forward to working with you!
