Background/Benefits

In February 2015, the MLPA Security Chair recruited street captains for the purpose of revitalizing the MLPA.  The program has grown from 8-9 street captains then to the current size of more than 50 street captains today.

In May 2016, the MLPA program became part of the APD’s city-wide Neighborhood Watch program, and was recognized for creating a safe community, communicating effectively within the neighborhood, promoting activities that build community, and maintaining connections with outside resources (e.g., state and local representatives).

Participants in the Neighborhood Watch program are the extra set of “eyes and ears” for law enforcement personnel.  Neighbors will be notified about security concerns through the MLPA Security Report, be-on-the lookout (BOLO) notices, and other emails.  The obvious benefits that Neighborhood Watch volunteers and their communities have experienced throughout the years include:

  • a reduction in crime
  • a better quality of life
  • a greater sense of security, responsibility, and personal control
  • building community pride and unity
  • preparing for helping others and ourselves in our community
  • providing law enforcement agencies with volunteer support year round

If you’d like to learn more about the program, to volunteer, or to learn if there is a street captain for your area, then please contact NeighborhoodWatch@mlpa.org.

Street Captain Coverage for Morningside/Lenox Park

Please consider volunteering as a street captain.  The job mainly involves forwarding emails from MLPA patrol and the street captain coordinator. This is not a difficult or time-consuming job. It is also a great way to get to know your neighbors better.  When there is criminal activity that is concerning (e.g., break-ins, robberies, a pattern of crimes), additional emails may need to be shared.  The most time-consuming task involves collecting email addresses for the neighbors on your street who want to participate.

If you are willing to be a street captain or want to know who your street captain is, please send an email to NeighborhoodWatch@mlpa.org
